I adopted from GGR recently and it was horrible. I usually do research before dong something so big but I had lost my other gentle giant three months ago and I thought their website looked good (how silly is that of me) and hey, it is Burt Ward!
Anyway, my experience is exactly that described by others. I felt like I was held hostage there and lied to from the beginning. I drove 8 hours after being promised that there were several long haired giants I could take home immediately. HUGE lie!
By midnight I was utterly exhausted and had only met two, yes two long haired dogs the entire night. Finally, I asked who else I could meet. It was then that Tracy said there were no others who could go home and she would actually prefer the two I had met, a Saint Bernard and a Great Pyr. not go home until they had one more "vet" appt. They were, of course, healthy but just to be sure...... She then said since I had driven so far she would try to get her vet to see the Saint the next morning which was a Sunday before a holiday. What a surprise, no vet appt. She let me take the Saint home. I had fallen in love with her and in spite of my severe reservations I paid the $890 (after being told I should not expect to pay more than $500) for an older dog. Sophie was extremely dirty with mud and diarrhea caked on her and was so underweight you could feel each and every ridge of every bone.
Tracy reiterated over and over again that all of their dogs were well trained, house broken, healthy and up-to-date on vaccinations. Well, the records were conveniently lost by the previous owner and the vaccinations Tracy had done were documented but also lost.
I got Sophie home and she had severe diarrhea. I had actually witnessed her going to the bathroom at the Ward's and also had diarrhea which was later denied by them. I then had to take her to the emergency vet the next day for eye infections and ear infections. Two days later I took her to the regular vet for vaccinations, rabies and a general exam.
I emailed everything to Burt and Tracy and got a scathing phone call from Tracy where she read a written letter stating that I was completely full of it. She promised and delivered a completely healthy dog and well trained and house broken when Sophie left. She could have easily gotten the infections on the ride home. (How is this?) and I should not have re-vaccinated her since she told me she did this.
I have switched her food, dewormed her, tried antibiotics and whatnot and she still had horrible diarrhea. We are now trying allergy testing. Sophie, now Sadie, is an absolute doll, definitely older than the 3 years told to me. She needs a lot of training and is not housebroken but is the love of my life.
I think that only reason I did not walk away from them that day is I couldn't imagine leaving that poor dog in that horrible environment.
Also, why can't we go into their house? Perhaps the over 55 dogs they have?
I hope they get shut down for being the puppy mill they are. I found it odd that each and every dog was said to still have to grow 2-3 inches taller and fill out. Only one of the families actually took a dog home that night; everyone else had to wait a week or more.
