My family and I adopted a Great Dane from GGR in April of 2006. We had a 9 month old Great Dane harlequin that we were given from a family that couldn't keep him. We grew to love Gunther very quickly (he’s huge, loveable, but not the most intelligent); anyway, he became very lonely in Feb because our 16 yr old lab mix died. So after seeing him mope around, we decided to get another Great Dane for him to have a buddy. We were looking for a dog about 1-3 years old that was energetic and wanted to play. Our pup was very active.
After pouring over the internet and finding it was not that easy to find (rescue) Great Danes (remember we didn’t want a little puppy), I found the Wards website. After filling out the required application (which took 2 hrs), we were declined because the dog would have to be outside for about a total of 4-5 hours a day while we were at work and no one was home. So I read more of the website and decided we had an extra bedroom that could be the dog room while we were gone. After all we had Gunther and there was no way I'd let him roam free in my house while I was gone (he was a puppy and love to chew- if he found a shoe he'd eat it and anything else). We were cleared then. Never did they come to check out if we were telling the truth or not (and we live about 20 min away).
Well the day arrived and we went there to pick up our dog. We brought Gunther along and my parents because they are at the house every morning to get the kids ready for school while my husband and I leave for work. It was warm, but not too bad if the car windows were open and we were in the shade. They had us park way in the back because another family was there adopting. So far it didn’t look too bad, like most animal properties in Norco. There was a girl roller skating that looked about 15 and pregnant??? Later we found out that this was their daughter (which I though was much younger since all the website pictures had her very young at about 5 or 6). We were then allowed to go to the holding area, or did they call it the show area? It was filthy, there was a dog there that was a Great Pyrenees that was thin as a rail with all bones showing, matted hair, and a bum back leg wrapped. They told us she had surgery a year ago and refuses to walk on it. She would touch and go on it and that was about it. My 5 year old daughter just loved her, but she was soooo sickly I wasn't going to take her home, plus we were looking for a Dane.
Because we had kids, they only brought out 3 dogs as their herd (even though the website stated and showed they were friendly to dogs and our kids were obviously not afraid) they were well filled out and filthy. The other family was finishing up with their dog (the Wards were trying to tell them that they don't need to be bathed, that will harm the dogs skin, they will clean themselves.) I didn't know they were cats??? This dog was beautiful and well filled out. Tracy, after being there 3 hrs already was not ready to bring dogs out.
Both Tracy and Burt were filthy and wearing clothes with holes and dirt all over them. Her hair was wild and she looked like a crazy, homeless lady. Since I was concerned about our pup, I asked if I could go in the back and walk him and give him a drink. Then Burt walked me back and I let my pup out while Burt proudly pointed out his horses and goat, and pig. Finally we were able to see the dogs, at my husbands urging; he couldn’t believe how long it was taking since we were told online that it could take 1/2 to 3 hrs. on average and we were already past the 3 hr mark and coming up on dinner time (with two kids there I mind you). The other person was still not done filling out his paper work with Tracy and she was kind of scattered all over the place.
She then proceeded to bring out exactly what we didn't ask for; sickly Great Pyrenees. I said I know my daughter likes the Great Pyrenees, but we want a Dane for our other Dane. So the parade began, none of these looked like the magnificent animal that the other family had. Some didn’t even look like purebred, like she said they were. She even brought out some puppies (six ) of some mix which she called American Mastiff Danes (very expensive and sought after designer dog according to her?) Oh, and we were not aloud to touch them at all, because our scent would ruin it for the mother to tend to them. They were 10 weeks old and eating dog food. What was to ruin? Pet stores and the pounds will let you pet puppies. Oh well.
Finally, after bringing 3 frail, timid Danes out, we saw Logan. He was tall, on the thin side, looked healthy and seemed confident. We said we would take him and didn't want to see more of the pathetic parade. After handing over $400 in cash and then paying with the credit card the remainder $500, we started filling out the paperwork, and they had to tag them with the chip. The other family was still there waiting. We found out the two dogs were brothers. Logan was significantly smaller but still looked good. We were told he is about 1 1/2 yrs old. Then the bomb dropped about the chip being in their name not ours. They made a convincing argument that if the dog was lost, it would be brought there and we would be contacted. I had never lost a dog, and since he was an inside dog the likelihood was minimal, we said ok. But we couldn't take him home that day. He still had not been neutered!!! My kids were devastated. We came back 2 days later and had to pick him up from the animal hospital. They tried to have us pay for it and I told them where he was coming from. They said but we adopted him that we had to pay. I quickly got Tracy on the phone and she was “oh, um, No it was covered in our adoption fees”. So we were not charged. We brought him home.
He was doing fine until the next couple of days he started to cough. He had kennel cough. I called Tracy, she tried to tell me it was not kennel cough but a viral cold; told me to come she had medicine she could give me. I went just to see what she would give me; it was antibiotics, exactly what you give for kennel cough. She gave it to me on a hand written note in a zip lock bag. I believe she has a whole big bottle of this stuff and gives it to the dogs to treat for kennel cough (well maybe just hers). This abx didn't cure it though so I took him to the vet and got more antibiotics. Logan was also loosing weight; I was using the GG special food because it sounded like it was the best (by them, of course). I started to research and found this website (www.GentleGiantNews.com). I changed food immediately- Mine had diarrhea and one was loosing weight. This helped the diarrhea but not the weight loss from Logan. Well it ended up he had worms and lots of them. Poor thing. Well we took care of that. He is no longer loosing weight but is still very thin. Our vet can't determine his age though. He is timid at times and gets very afraid when he hears my daughter cry and cringes if you go to pet his head too quickly. Is this because of his stay at the Wards or from his previous home, I don't know. He is a great dog and we love him to death, we hope he's the age she said and we'll have him around a long time. Oh and to fix the avid chip thing- after reading on this website about how the Wards will charge you if you have to pick up your lost dog. Or that I didn’t want them to have any possible claim on Logan, I called the 1-800 number on the chip tag and asked if I could change the info to my name. They said it is a number that was given to Tracy Ward (which I said yes, we adopted him from her rescue), and they said she hadn't registered the number yet so it cost me 13 dollars and now it is in all my info and nothing of GGR is on the avid chip. I also got my rabies vaccination too, but that was because I picked Logan up from the hospital and asked if they could print it up. Which they happily did, the date of the vaccination was the date of the surgery. HMMMMM, interesting huh? The hospital she uses is the Norco Animal Hospital on 6th St. Maybe there you can get your rabies vaccinations. They had nothing on file for any of the other vaccinations. So I had Logan vaccinated (who knows when he had his last vaccinations).
